Epic Games has announced that the Epic Achievements system is coming to the Epic Games Store next week. The Epic Achievements system borrows the naming conventions of PlayStation’s Trophy system, and the statistical conventions of the Xbox’s Achievement Score system. Every achievement has a certain amount of XP tied to it (the Xbox influence), which in turn, gives it the value of a Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum achievement (the PlayStation influence). Bronze achievements range from 5-45XP, Silver from 50-95XP, and Gold from 100-200XP, with Platinum being a solid 250XP.
Epic Achievements will not be available for all games out of the gate, but only a select few including Rocket League, Hades, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, and some others. Games that are compatible with Epic Achievements will have a new details page where players can track their achievement progress and according to the release, will “highlight Epic Achievements” that are close to unlockng. Achievements will also be viewable while browsing games in the store on a title’s “Game Detail Page” so players can get a glimpse at what’s in store for them. In the coming months, more games will be receiving Epic Achievements support, and Epic Games will be releasing social features and player rewards for the service.
Epic Games has been testing achievements for a long time now, so it is great to see the feature finally being revealed in full. It is a bit discouraging how limited the selection of games will be at first, but according to Epic Games, it is supposed to be pretty easy for developers to enable them in their games. What will be interesting is Epic Games’ plan for social features and rewards, especially, because not all players are gratified by merely unlocking achievements for completion—there must be an incentive. If the Epic Games Store gives players more ways to express themselves, or even like game-exclusive rewards for certain achievements, it will be on the right track.
