Most major gaming storefronts have “free” game promotions, but there’s usually a catch involved. For example, PS Plus free games require a PlayStation Plus subscription, and anyone that wants to access the Nintendo Switch Online games must subscribe to that particular service. When it comes to the Epic Games Store free games, there are no strings attached. All players have to do is claim the games during their window of availability.

With that in mind, Epic Games Store users have until Thursday, December 29 at 10:00am CT to claim the latest free game. Replacing Epic Games Store free game Severed Steel is none other than Mortal Shell, a Soulslike that was nominated for Best Debut game at The Game Awards 2020. Mortal Shell has many gameplay mechanics that should be instantly familiar to fans of FromSoftware’s Dark Souls franchise, though it’s much smaller in scale.

Epic Games Store Free Games December 28

Mortal Shell - December 28 Dishonored (likely, unclear which game in the series will be given away for free) - December 29

Getting Mortal Shell for free is a steal, and fans of the Soulslike genre should be sure to grab it as soon as possible. In the meantime, some Epic Games Store users may be wondering what the December 29 free game is. While they technically have to wait for December 29 to roll around to know with 100% certainty, the wrapping paper includes a big hint that clues fan in on what the free game will be.

It seems highly likely that the next Epic Games Store free game is going to be one of the Dishonored games. It’s possible that multiple Dishonored games will be included, but that remains to be seen. Possibilities include the original Dishonored, Dishonored 2, or even the standalone expansion pack Dishonored: Death of the Outsider. Epic Games Store users will simply have to return on December 29 to find out for sure.

Bethesda has been well-represented by the Epic Games Store free mystery games this year. Wolfenstein: The New Order was free this month, as were three old-school Fallout games. It’s possible the free Dishonored game will be the last Bethesda representation in the lineup, but it’s also possible future free games will be from Bethesda as well.
